Comparing All RunLessWire Receiver Models: Which One Do You Need?
A plain-English rundown of the five receiver options — what each is built for, and how to match one to the job.
By RunLessWire | July 2026
Every RunLessWire wireless switch pairs with a receiver (the Friends of Hue models uses the Philips Hue Bridge as a receiver) — the piece behind the wall that actually powers the load. Which one you pick depends on what you’re controlling: a single lamp, a chandelier, a low-voltage LED strip, or something on a plug. Here’s a rundown of all five current models, what each is built for, and how to choose.
1. 5A On/Off Receiver — The Standard Choice
For 90% of residential jobs, the 5A on/off receiver is the right pick. It handles up to 600W — enough for a room of typical LED or incandescent lighting, an exhaust fan, or a garbage disposal. Installation is straightforward at either the fixture or the switch location; it needs a neutral wire like any modern switch. Range is 50 to 150 feet (with no obstruction), plenty for a single-family home. If you’re outfitting a bedroom, hallway, or living room, this is a great solution.
2. 20A On/Off Receiver — Heavy Loads and Commercial Use
When the load exceeds what a 5A can handle, step up to the 20A. It’s built for commercial installs or heavy residential use — think whole-room lighting banks, motor loads up to one horsepower, or multi-fixture chandeliers. Same wireless communication as the 5A, same install process, but with beefier internals for up to 2400W. If you’re doing a commercial space or a residential job with unusually high wattage, this is the one.
3. 120VAC Phase Dimming Receiver — For Smooth Dimming
For any job that calls for dimming, the 120VAC phase dimming receiver is what you want. Standard use cases: chandeliers, recessed cans, track lighting, ceiling fans, and dimmable LED fixtures. It installs at the fixture location (the size fits better there than in a switch box) and dims by phase-cut, which works with most modern dimmable LEDs. Pair it with any RunLessWire wireless switch and you get on/off, dim up, and dim down from a single rocker.
4. 8–30VDC Low-Volt Dimming Receiver — LED Strips and DC Fixtures
If you’re controlling low-voltage LED strip lights, landscape fixtures, or any DC LED system between 8 and 30 volts, this is your receiver. It uses PWM (pulse-width modulation) dimming with 65,000 steps for genuinely smooth transitions — no visible stepping at low brightness. It’s also physically tiny, roughly one-quarter to one-half the size of typical LED dimmers, so it fits in enclosures where nothing else will. Under-cabinet lighting, cove lighting, and LED tape runs are the classic applications.
5. BT Wall Plug Receiver — No Install, Plug-and-Play
For anything you can control by plugging into an outlet — a lamp, a fan, a space heater, a Christmas tree — the wall plug receiver skips wiring entirely. It plugs into any standard outlet and responds to the BT series wireless switch. There’s no junction box to open, no neutral wire to find, and no drywall to touch. It’s the fastest way to add wireless control to a rental or an apartment. Note: pairs only with BT series switches, not the standard wireless line.
How to Choose
The quickest path: start with the load. Standard household lighting or a small appliance? 5A on/off. Heavy load or motor? 20A. Anything you want to dim? 120VAC dimming for line-voltage fixtures, low-volt dimming for LED strips. Nothing you can hardwire — or you’re renting? Wall plug BT. Once the load is matched, every receiver behaves the same from the user’s side: press a wireless switch, the load responds. The differences are entirely behind the wall.
One Switch, Five Ways to Use It
What makes the RunLessWire lineup work is that most receivers speaks the same wireless language. Pair any compatible switch with any receiver and you’re done. Start with a 5A in the living room, add a low-volt dimmer for kitchen accent lighting, drop in a wall plug for a bedroom lamp — all controlled by the same style of switch. Five install paths.
Every RunLessWire receiver is engineered and assembled in the USA, backed by a 5-year warranty, and built to last 20+ years. Browse the complete lineup in our Wireless Switch Kits collection.
